SPJ NorCal is pleased to welcome Lowell Bergman, Emeritus Reva and David Logan Distinguished Chair in Investigative Journalism at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, as a featured speaker at this month’s 35th annual James Madison Freedom of Information awards dinner.

Bergman’s illustrious career has earned him a reputation as one of the savviest investigative journalists in the country. Bergman’s reporting has been recognized with the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service as well as numerous Emmy Awards and other national honors. SPJ NorCal’s upcoming awards dinner, to be held March 19 at Delancey Street Town Hall in San Francisco, is headlined by career achievement award recipient David Weir of KQED. Tickets are selling fast and can be purchased here.

Bergman will set one of the through-lines of this year’s awards dinner: law enforcement transparency. Northern California journalists and First Amendment attorneys had a banner year on this front; indeed, of the honorees at the March 19 dinner, more than half are being recognized for work related to public safety agencies and public records.

The event will also feature big-ticket auction items, including a one-night stay at a rustic cabin in Sonoma County and box seats to a San Jose Sharks hockey game. We will also offer wine, books and other items available through a silent auction. Cash, check and credit/debit card payments will be accepted.

Please visit spjnorcal.org for more information about the awards and past recipients. For questions about the awards dinner, please email the SPJ NorCal FOI Committee at spjnorcalfoi@gmail.com.
